“In order to respond to global crises we will need to transform education. I believe the CBE virtual peer method can make a significant contribution in that process.” Charles Hopkins, UNESCO chair, York University, Canada
THE OPPORTUNITY
We support faculty, staff and student leaders in their efforts to build peer communities and grow a sense of belonging across their campus. Many who support students experience this challenge: You have a dedicated team and ambitious goals. Yet, you are looking for practical ways to deeply connect your learners and create engaging peer communities that enable uplifting group experiences.
To meet this challenge, Crossing Borders Education (CBE) is offering your instructors free pilot programs of a new, innovative, media-enhanced, uniquely interactive Virtual Peer Dialogue method for use with student groups. The CBE methodology is shaped and brought alive by CBE film work which is dedicated to capturing authentic voices of diverse students. This method will enable you to build trust between diverse participants in uniquely practical ways that are then easily scalable as pre-semester programs, curricular modules and extra-curricular events.
In this program CBE partners with Purdue University’s award winning Center for Intercultural Learning (CILMAR) who specialize in creating meaningful dialogue across cultural differences. It is offered to you free of charge through your schools partnership with Cisco Networking Academy.
THE INVITATION
Join a group of other instructors in a demo workshop that will model this proven, patented-pending methodology to actively engage your groups by:
- growing trust and deep connections between diverse participants
- expanding intercultural perspectives and practise empathic dialogue
- cultivating practical Life Skills such as relationship-building and deep listening (see Community Building Skills, a 2.5 minute film clip in which participants talk about the life skills they are practising through the workshops)
- translating enhanced awareness of self, others, and the world into practical, emotionally sustainable, concrete actions for building Peer Communities
OUTCOMES:
After participating in the pilot program, you will be welcome to register your group of students for an upcoming workshop series. These peer dialogue programs can support you building community across your campus(es) and support your students in the intersecting needs:
- Wellbeing: In a safe space for students to share and develop resilience skills, participants learn a simple, practical method that can help them form peer support groups across campus.
- Interactive skills: The method develops life skills, often also referred to as “soft,” intercultural, wellbeing, civil dialogue, collaboration, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Empowerment: The dialogues embed students in uplifting communities to nurture practical, small, purposeful actions that enhance participatory culture and civic imagination.
DIALOGUE PROCESS:
We facilitate our dialogue sessions in intimate and diverse small groups (4-12 participants) in order to experience the depth, vulnerability, and courage necessary to nurture empathetic dialogues across differences.
The intended outcomes for our participants are:
- an experience of meaningful peer connections
- an open space for uplifting inspirations around pressing issues
- an opportunity to practice social skills, such as active listening and public speaking
- an opportunity to cultivate wellbeing practices, uplift those of us who feel emotionally exhausted, and build a web of nurturing peer communities
