Finding One: Design Matters
Through use of the Engaged Learning Index and the Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory we learned some of the ways that the design of the learning experience matters. Students who participated in programs that:
- addressed empathy development;
- included frameworks for reflection and meaning making; and
- led students to engage with people and places that were different than they had experienced before
were more likely to increase their self- and other-awareness than those who participated in programs more directly focused on content.
