What did we do?
In our first project, we asked groups of study abroad students and the faculty who led their programs to provide us with information that would help us understand which students undergo the greatest positive change and what common components there are between the programs those students attended.
In our second project, we observed students who participated in virtual exchange activities embedded in their courses to provide us with information about how that experience might change their worldview.
What did we find?
We tend to look at learners as a monolithic block as they come into our learning spaces…they are so different. Who the learner is matters. How we design our learning experiences matters.
Approximately two thirds of students who attended a program with a focus on empathy development increased their “other access” after the program, while only a third of students did in other programs.
